It’s not just about promotion

Marketing affects every part of your business. There’s loads to think about before you even start on the promotion bit.

You have to know who your ideal customer is.

Your product or service has to be what they want.

The price needs to be right for them.

You need to give them a reason to buy from

you rather than from a competitor, and really understand what this is.

There’s loads more too, but we’d be here all day!

You need great goals

Good marketing doesn’t just happen. It has to be done for a reason.

What do you want to achieve in your business?

So what does your marketing need to do to make that happen?

What sales do you need to make?

How many customers do you need?

Where will you find them?

How much do they need to buy from you to create the turnover and profits you need in your business?

You really need to know all this before you can even start working out which marketing tactics will be best for you.

You need a plan

Once you’ve decided what you are going to do, get it planned out. In as much detail as you can possibly manage. Think of every element that needs to go into that piece of marketing, and plan out what needs doing, when, and by whom. Check with your suppliers exactly how long it will take to write things, design things, print things etc. Put it all in a plan. You’ll probably have to start some projects much earlier than you ever thought.

You’ll get better results with a great brief

Copywriter, designers, web developers, photographers – none of them are mind-readers! The better you can articulate exactly what you want someone to feel, think and do as a result of the work you’re asking for, the better the job that will be done.
